Open Classes

No Open Classes are being offered at this time.

Melanie's technique classes are strongly influenced by the movement styles of New York based choreographers Doug Varone and Stephen Petronio.   Technically, she emphasizes proper alignment and attaining a large range of motion through the use of plié in the legs and extending the limbs beyond pedestrian use, as well as finding an ease of movement through a release of tension in the joints. Her exercises and phrases emphasize suspension: finding the rise and fall of movement as well as a "sideways" suspension or "ride."

Levels
The technique classes that are currently being offered are at the intermediate/advanced level. This means that the participant has had modern dance training or has had substantial training in another dance style and is able to "pick up" movement sequences. Each participant is encouraged to work at his or her own level; whether working on picking up movement sequences or working on the nuances and individual expression of a phrase.

Group Classes
Melanie's classes are structured so that there is continuity from day to day and week to week for the participant who takes class on a regular basis; yet, because of Melanie's clarity in teaching, you may join class at any time and not feel "lost."
Check back for group class updates.

Recommendation
Melanie recommends that you take the class at least three times before you decide whether or not this class is satisfying and is what you are looking for. It takes time to get accustomed to taking dance from a new teacher and in a new style.   After three classes, you will have a clear understanding of the warm-up and movement vocabulary.

The Poetics of Movement Workshop on Dance and Film

The Center for the Moving Image at the University at Buffalo is hosting
The Poetics of Movement, an intensive workshop conducted by nationally and internationally recognized filmmaker, Elliot Caplan, to teach film as a collaborative tool for the exploration of movement with other art forms including dance, theater and the visual arts. Following morning technique class taught by Melanie Aceto, each day includes lectures, two production sessions, screenings and a guest artist series featuring artists from adjacent disciplines.  The workshop is taking place during the nation’s oldest new music festival, June in Buffalo.  Participants will have the opportunity to hear live music performances by the nation’s leading composers of contemporary music.
No Audition or Previous Film experience required.
